My name is Laura Conley, I’m from Bloomington, Indiana, and I launched Cokarille Print Co. on May 1, 2022. In the four printmaking-filled months since then, my husband and I moved across the country from San Diego to our beloved home state of Indiana. In that same spirit of homecoming, I’m starting this website to bring all of my work under one roof. You can still find my shop on Etsy, Patreon, Facebook and Instagram, but this site gives me the flexibility to organize my products and share more about myself and my process. If you’d like to know more about my background and my plans for the store, keep reading!

2012-2021: Bloomington, Indiana

My first experience with printmaking was in high school. I had been drawing basically nonstop since the day I could hold a pencil, and this new medium worked my brain in a new way. Drawing on a page is an additive process, but relief printmaking is reductive, since you cut away the material to make the image. In my first year at Indiana University I took an intro to printmaking course which included 4 different mediums, and relief printing remains my favorite to this day. My biggest period of growth came when I applied and was accepted into the BFA printmaking program. I was constantly inspired by the work of my peers, and I was very lucky to be able to share studio space and critiques with MFA students as well as my fellow BFAs. At the same time that I was in the BFA program, I was studying digital art in the Media School at IU. I specialized in video game art, but I also did character design and concept art for an animated short film. In my senior year, I attended the Media School’s Semester in LA program, where I was hoping to get further into animation or video game art. During this period, I learned that I wanted to work on my own stuff instead of making a thousand iterations of the same thing for someone else. When the program ended, I returned to Bloomington and worked in a local art supply store. I worked alongside artists of different mediums and got to test out all kinds of art supplies, so I was moved to get back into more traditional mediums like painting, drawing and printing.

2021-2022: San Diego, California

I met my husband during the Semester in LA program in 2018, so California is a special place for us. We decided to move to San Diego after living in Bloomington together for a couple of years. I saw this as an opportunity to get serious about printmaking again, and I started to plan out what would become Cokarille Print Co. I carved some new blocks, but I got so fed up with printing by hand since I couldn’t seem to ever get a clean print. In October 2021 I bought a Woodzilla Press, and I fell in love with printmaking again. My production increased considerably, and so did my confidence. Honestly, there’s no better feeling than pulling a clean, crisp print out of a press. I spent the next 6 months refining my process and developing my inventory, and I launched my Etsy store and Patreon in May 2022. This year in California was another time of personal and artistic growth, but it also made me realize that I belong in Indiana. Maybe the first hint should have been my intense love of the flora and fauna of the Hoosier state.

2022 and Onward: Muncie, Indiana

I lived in Muncie for the first 3 years of my life, and it’s my husband’s hometown. After being away for so long, we missed everything about the Midwest: the rain, the cornfields, the forests, the sunsets, and definitely the people. Since moving here, I have started selling at in-person markets, and the response has been very positive. I’ve expanded my inventory from greeting cards to tote bags, bandanas, stickers and magnets, and these will soon become available on my online store. It feels great to be so busy doing what I love, and to see people smile when they see my work. I am hoping to get my products in local storefronts soon, and I plan to keep most of my weekends booked with markets in the coming months.
